What is product design and how is it different from UI/UX design?

Product design is broader — it encompasses the entire product experience from strategy through to the finished interface. UI/UX design is a part of product design. Product designers also think about business goals, user research, product strategy, and cross-functional collaboration with engineering and marketing.

What does the product design process look like?

Discover (user research, competitive analysis, problem definition) → Define (personas, user stories, success metrics) → Design (ideation, wireframes, prototypes) → Test (usability testing, iterate) → Deliver (design handoff to engineering, specifications). Real projects are rarely this linear — expect to loop back.

What tools do product designers use?

Figma is the dominant tool for interface design and prototyping. Miro or FigJam for collaborative workshops. Notion for documentation. Maze or UsabilityHub for remote user testing. Principle or ProtoPie for complex micro-interactions. Most design teams are Figma-first today.

How do I evaluate the quality of a product design agency?

Look at their portfolio — not just how things look, but whether they show their process. The best agencies show how they went from user research to design decisions. Ask them to walk you through a case study. Good design is backed by reasoning, not just aesthetics.

When should a startup invest in professional product design?

Early. Design decisions made during product development are expensive to change later. Even a lean startup can benefit from 2–4 weeks of UX research and design before writing a single line of code. Bad design is one of the most common reasons early-stage products fail to retain users.
